At Street Scene we like to think of ourselves as Jack of all trades when it comes to tours and events. As such whenever a challenge comes along in the form of something we haven’t done before a smile creeps on to our faces. It’s like an adventure. And if you know Street Scene you know this… we LOVE adventure. So when the KwaZulu Natal Institute of Architecture (KZNIA) came to us with an idea for a new Durban School Program they wanted some help in formulating we jumped at the chance.
This particular Durban School Program has a rather tailored brief. The KZNIA wanted to showcase architecture as a possible career path to kids from surrounding communities who may not be as exposed to it as they would like. They knew we had experience with School Tours and that we had extensive experience in Townships around Durban. Lastly they knew that had yearnings for projects like this. So when we got the call we accepted before they had finished asking us to be involved and got busy putting everything together. The program called for some 60 grade 9 learners to be selected from 4 different Township schools in the KwaMashu and Inanda area based on academic merit shown in their year thus far. These grade 9’s would then be treated to a day of talks and model making with architects on hand to field questions on the industry and assist them in their creations. It was a day dedicated to learning and furthering these young minds understanding of this career option.
The day was a phenomenal success with both the learners, accompanying teachers and KZNIA all having a great time and leaving with smiles on their faces and brains brimming with new ideas. We were thrilled to have been able to facilitate this awesome initiative
