Last week we hosted our 2nd Annual Soccer Tournament in KwaMashu, at Ground No. 7 in J Section. As we spend much of our time in KwaMashu, we feel that it is important to give back to the community, and this soccer tournament provides an opportunity to do this and create a fun day out for the enthusiastic teams and their supporters.
Building on the success of last year’s event, this year saw a total of 16 teams taking part in the u/13 and u/17 category- some 240 kids in total. Throughout the day, the talented youngsters provided action-packed entertainment for the 500 strong crowd, including the addition of a charismatic commentator named Nhlanhla on the PA system.
Double Classics and Induna Lots came 3rd in the u/13 category, and Super Eagles and Induna Lots came 3rd in the u/17 category. In the u/13 category, the best player was Spamandla from Induna Lots and the best goalkeeper Sivuyile from Mabura Dribblers. The best players in the u/17 category were Zidane from Double Classics u/17 and the best goalkeeper Mfundo Ntuli from James Cosmos.
In the final games, Mbuso FC beat the match favourites Mabura Dribblers 1 – 0 in the u/13 category whilst in the u/17 category firm favourites Double Classics beat James Cosmos 1 – 0, with a stunning goal by the player of the tournament, the aptly named Zidane.
Street Scene plans to continue building on the success of this event, ensuring that next year’s tournament is a well-publicised highlight on our 2013 calendar. Street Scene is grateful to our sponsors for making this event an enjoyable day for everyone, so in no particular order, a big thanks to Red Bull, Charmers Sporting Apparel, KwaMashu SPAR, and eThekwini Municipality for making this event possible.
